Pinot Noir: An Outstanding Red Grape
Saturday, January 12th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedFor more than two thousand years the area of France known as Slope of Gold or Cote d’Or located in Burgundy has been the place where Pinot Noir has been grown and though a lot of study has taken place regarding what it is about this place that makes the grapes grown here so special and which provides them with a very unique personality, the answer eludes one and one can only marvel at the magical properties that makes Cote d’Or so unique. Still, one can think of different factors that help in making this grape so very different and unique.
Very Old In Age
To begin with, Pinot Noir is a grape that has seen many ages come and go, and you will also find that it has been cloned extensively though you can still be sure that every Pinot grape cloned still will contain identical DNA changing only in their mutations which gives each different type of Pinot Noir a separate characteristic. Nevertheless, it is not so easy to cultivate these grapes and bring them to maturity, while making them into wines also has its fair share of difficulties. The Pinot Noir grape does have a skin that is thin and it is delicate and it will grow best in a season that is long and also cool. And, the way that the Pinot Noir is pruned, and the harvesting technique used as well as trellis selection all play a major part on how Pinot Noir wines will eventually turn out to be.
As mentioned, the Pinot Noir has been vastly cloned and thanks to good choice of cloning and improved techniques of winemaking, there are excellent Pinot Noir grown in California as well, which allows for making wines of different styles as well.
Nevertheless, being a very noble grape, the Pinot Noir is sure to give the wines that are made from it a very haunting touch and the concentration too will be excellent, and though one may attribute the greatness of this grape to muses, there are other factors that help make this grape stand out from any other type of red grape.
The Pinot Noir grape is of thin skin, is very difficult to grow and make into wine, and it ripens very early in its growing season and ideal soil in which it can be grown are soils based on limestone as well as clay, though with clay based soils, the Pinot Noir will show an increase in weight. And, compared to other red grapes, this grape will have more propensities to mutate and that is why growers of this grape are so obsessed with getting it to grow right.
